The history of what you and I know to be oatmeal traces back some 32,000 years to hunter-gatherers in the Paleolithic Age. Fast forward to modern times, and name-brand instant oatmeals have arguably devolved, in some ways, with the presence of added sugars and weed-killing chemicals such as glyphosate.
Enter the new brand Mylk Labs. Grace Cheng, a fashion model and entrepreneur, set out to make a better instant oatmeal, and the result is pretty incredible. The brand offers five flavors—strawberry vanilla, apple cinnamon, blueberry maple, almond pink salt, and coconut cinnamon—and they're all low-sugar, gluten-free, and super easy to make.
They're also free of glyphosate, which oatmeal connoisseurs will know is a big deal. In 2018, the Environmental Working Group published a study stating that all cereals and oats they had tested had the presence of the known carcinogen glyphosate. This chemical is in a weed killer distributed by Monsanto and environmentalists have long warned that glyphosate has a negative climate impact, often wiping out a region's biodiversity. Glyphosate-free oats are a more well-regarded choice for both the environment and humans.
So now, the most important question: Does Mylk Lab oatmeal actually taste good? I tried their sampler pack and my answer here is "100 percent yes."
They're the perfect level of sweet, so it feels like a more mature version of the childhood-favorite instant oat packets. Mylk Labs's select flavors shine through in a way that doesn't feel fake or overpowering, but you'll still be able to guess which is which.
After tasting them all, their best-selling blueberry maple flavor became my favorite. It combines the familiar maple syrup oatmeal taste with a subtle berry flavor, and is good on its own or with some extra berries thrown in (I recommend the latter).
The only downsides are the cost and texture. They run about $20 for a 12-pack, which isn't terrible, but still more expensive than a 48 pack of Quaker's Instant Oats. It's also super important to stir up the oats before and after water is added. My first attempt at making them ended with chunks of undercooked oats and bites of just sunflower seeds because I hadn't realized how much stirring was needed.
But when it comes to having a healthy, sustainable breakfast, I can genuinely say that Mylk Labs is a great way to go. I'll likely be buying a 12-pack to keep on hand for busy mornings, and would recommend them to a friend in a heartbeat.
