This Is Where The Biggest Vegetables Around The World Have Been Found - TheTravel

Did you ever wonder what the biggest vegetables in the world looked like? No? Well, even if you didn't, we're here to deliver the content that you didn't know you needed... such as information pertaining to some of the biggest, baddest (but really quite delicious) veggies on the planet. From the U.S. to Europe, vegetables have come in all shapes and sizes and there are even subscription boxes now that allow you to have your own unique produce shipped right to your front door. However, these are a little bit too big to ship, unless you're planning on using a crane and a cargo container...

It's hard to believe that growing such a vegetable is possible but these countries have proven that it can be done. We've seen big pumpkins and rather oversized carrots, but what about a squash that weighs thousands or a carrot that could weigh as much as a small child? We don't know about you, but that's a heck of a lot of soup that can be made.

Biggest Melon: Tennessee

Apparently, melons love the heat and warm temperatures, at least that's what the explanation was for the 350-pound watermelon that was grown by Chris Kent of Tennessee. The monstrous fruit was (okay, we know it's not a vegetable but it's included because wow) entered in the Operation Pumpkin Festival that was held in Ohio back in 2013 and ended up coming in first place. During a good growing season, watermelons can grow up to 70 pounds, making Kent's melon one of the more unique varieties of giant fruit.

Biggest Banana Bunch: Canary Islands

When you think of the largest or heaviest banana, it's easy to think of an actual banana that weighs a ton. Rather, the world's biggest banana actually came in the form of a banana bunch. Normally, only about ten or so bananas can grow in any one bunch but one farmer, Manuel Kabana, proved that theory wrong back in 2001 in the Canary Islands. This bunch of bananas spawned a whopping 473 bananas, which is ridiculous in comparison to the average number of ten bananas in a bunch. The total weight of the bunch clocked in at 287 pounds and was grown on a banana farm that was in operation for 30 years prior.

Biggest Lemon: Israel

Some people love lemons and some people hate them and the sheer size of this one is likely to draw some strong feelings. A lemon that weighs 11 pounds is likely to yield a lot of juice, however, that wasn't the goal of this citrus fruit. Farmer Aharon Shemoel was responsible for growing this huge lemon and thanks to Israel's climate, there was really no better place in the world for it to grow. Citrus fruits love the Mediterranean weather patterns which bring plenty of sunlight and moderate temperatures.

Biggest Onion: England

We're not sure how one would slice into this onion without immediately erupting into a fit of hysterics (maybe if you don some goggles first) but it came in at an impressive 18 pounds. Peter Glazebrook, a professional gardener in England, was responsible for this monster of an onion, and it took him 25 years of trying to grow something so massive. His success was met with surprise and awe as the onion was bigger than the average person's head and was likely big enough to make multiple stockpots of French onion soup, and then some.

Biggest Cabbage: Alaska

Alaska is well known for many things but cabbage isn't usually one of them. However, that all changed when a cabbage weighing 132 pounds entered the scene. The giant vegetable was grown by Scott A. Robb and this has not been the first massive vegetable the gardener has been responsible for - a giant turnip was also in the running.

Biggest Sweet Potato: Spain

The world's largest sweet potato is interesting because unlike many other vegetables, potatoes grow from long shoots under the ground. That makes this particular sweet potato even more unique considering it clocked in weighing 81 pounds back in 2004. The starchy vegetable was grown by Manual Perez in Spain and it actually made the Guinness Book of World Records.

Heaviest Pumpkin: Germany

It's unreal to think of a pumpkin weight as much or more than a car back in 2016, Germany saw what was likely one of the heaviest pumpkins ever grown to date. The huge squash topped out at a substantial weight of just over 2,623 pounds, which, up until that point, was unheard of. That's either a lot of pumpkin pie or a massive Jack 'O Lantern... or maybe both, and then some.
