PORT ANGELES — A new bridge will replace the makeshift one that collapsed in mid-April over Whiskey Creek on the Olympic Adventure Trail. The replacement is funded by a Clallam County lodging tax grant.
County commissioners are expected to approve the $75-thousand-dollar project bid at their meeting next week.
Located near milepost 18 on the 25-mile Olympic Adventure Trail, the new bridge will also accommodate horses, unlike its predecessor, which only supported hikers and bikers. The trail starts near the state Route 112 Elwha River Bridge and connects to the Olympic Discovery Trail-Spruce Railroad Trail segment in Olympic National Park.
County Transportation Program Manager Steve Gray says there are some literally steep challenges to getting the new bridge built.
“It is one and a half miles from the nearest kind of parking area or gravel pit from Joyce Piedmont Road. It’s a narrow corridor trail surface itself, three feet wide with vegetation. We can’t haul it in typical large equipment. So, we started looking immediately at these fiberglass-bridge types, which the Department of Natural Resources has recently been using on a lot of their trail systems,” said Gray.
“They’re easy to assemble, like an erector set. There’s very clear instructions on how to set them up. You know, they set these things all over the place in pretty remote places. So, a crew of three people and three to four days in perfect conditions can assemble it on site. These are the ticket for this kind of thing,” said County Public Works Engineer Jesse Goodman.
The previous log bridge collapsed after 20 years of use. The new bridge will be 60 feet long and 6 feet wide, built from fiberglass due to its lightweight and ease of transport.
