The hills are alive with “The Sound of Music,” and so, for a few short weeks, is the Cedar Street Playhouse in Rolla, home of Ozark Actors Theatre (OAT). Season 37 of the OAT summer professional season is upon our community, and if Thursday night’s opening production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” is any indication, theatregoers are in for a tremendous, heart-warming triumph.
“The Sound of Music,” the much beloved film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was released in 1965, but prior to that, in 1959, “The Sound of Music,” with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, premiered on Broadway, garnering five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It is the stage production which gave us songs we all know and love, such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and “My Favorite Things.” But it was Andrews and Plummer who would ensconce these songs in the hearts of generations in the movie version, which went on to win five Academy Awards.
