Training course on protected vegetables - The Tribune

A two-day online training course on “Protected cultivation of vegetable crops and high density planting canopy management in fruit crops” was organised by the Skill Development Centre, Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), for the in-service candidates.

In all, 18 agriculture development officers, horticulture development officers, soil conservation officers, scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras and PAU attended the course, held under the guidance of Dr Jaskran Singh Mahal, Director of Extension Education, PAU.

Dr Tejinder Singh Riar, Associate Director (Skill Development), said university experts provided tips to get higher yield, better quality crops and higher farm income from protected cultivation.

Dr Kiran Grover, senior extension specialist (Food and Nutrition), coordinated the course while Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar and Dr Ruma Devi, experts from the Departments of Fruit Science and Vegetable Science, were the technical coordinators, respectively.

Dr Anirudh Thakur and Dr Gurteg Singh, experts of the fruit science, apprised the participants of high-density planting and canopy management in temperate fruit crops and evergreen fruit plants with special reference to citrus.

Dr RK Dhall and Dr Sailesh Jindal, experts of vegetable science, explained the protected cultivation of cucumber under poly net house, and cultivation of capsicum and tomato under protected conditions, respectively. They emphasised that protected cultivation leads to enhanced protection, less incidence of insect pests and diseases, and enables year-round cultivation.

Later, Dr Grover, while proposing a vote of thanks, said the course was quite fruitful in refreshing and updating the knowledge of participants.
