Once again, the carrot was the Swiss' favorite vegetable last year. Per capita, 8.45 kilograms of the vegetable were eaten last year. With nearly 8.5 kilograms per capita, the previous year's figure of 7.91 kilograms was clearly exceeded for the carrots. This is shown by the figures from the Statistical Annual Report Vegetables 2018 of the Swiss Central Office for Vegetable Crops and Special Crops (SZG) on Friday, which were reported by the Agricultural Information Service (LID).
Tomatoes are also popular
Tomatoes (6.74 kilograms) are in second place, followed by peppers (4.5 kilograms). In tenth place are cherry tomatoes with 2.85 kilograms per head. If these were to be added to the other tomatoes, they could displace the carrot from the top position. The total consumption of carrots was 71,718 tons, that of tomatoes 57,154 tons. Peppers saw a consumption of 38,214 tons in total.
Watermelon is more popular than cucumber
In fourth place in the "vegetable hit parade" is the watermelon at 3.9 kilograms. Also popular are iceberg lettuce (3.81 kilograms) and cucumber (3.6 kilograms) in fifth and sixth place. (SDA)
