As the spring gardening season approaches, more people are buying plants, seeds and other supplies. Local experts say it's a healthy hobby that could help feed your family and save money.

No one is more ready for spring to arrive than Dr. Lucy Bradley, an urban horticulture professor and extension specialist at North Carolina State University.

"This is so exciting," said Bradley. "It's all getting ready to pop."

Bradley said many people start out vegetable gardening, buying small spring vegetable plants like lettuce and kale.

To save money, you can use a small green house or even a window sill to grow seeds indoors, which is cheaper than buying plants, she said.

Gardening also involves load bearing exercise, improves mental health and brings neighbors closer.

"You just have to look at the broader picture of all the things the garden does for you with health and getting out into the sun and exercising," Bradley said. "When you garden, you always have things to share."

If you grow enough vegetables over time, you can save even more money by drying or freezing crops.

If you're a beginner, Bradley recommends starting with baby steps do you don't become overwhelmed when planting.

"Start small, and then start smaller," Bradley said. "Because you're so much better off if you can grow a little garden extraordinarily well than if you try to manage a really big garden."

Bradley recommends buying a planting calendar that indicates the best times for planting different kinds of produce. You can also visit N.C. State's cooperative gardening website for more tips.
