Russia: greenhouse vegetable production increased by 80% in five years - hortidaily.com

borostos.blogspot.com

The total greenhouse area in Russia has increased by more than 1.5 times since 2016, to approximately 3 thousand hectares. Vegetable production has risen by more than 80% over the same period, with a record of 1.37 million tons harvested last year.

The leading regions that produce greenhouse vegetables are Lipetsk, Moscow and Volgograd Oblasts, and Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais.

The increase in production is due, among other things, to the use of high-yielding varieties and modern greenhouse vegetable cultivation technologies. As a result, the vegetable yield rose by 14.3% last year to 47.2kg/m2. Meanwhile, it has reached approximately 100 kg/m2 for tomatoes and exceeded 160 kg/m2 for cucumbers in the most modern fifth-generation greenhouses. State support measures, including preferential investment and short-term loans, contribute to the intensive development of greenhouse vegetable production.

The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia expects the positive trend to continue in 2021, with a harvest in winter greenhouses estimated to exceed 1.4 million tonnes. Since the beginning of the year, there have already been grown 13.3% more vegetables and green crops than in the same period last year (319 thousand tons). In particular, farmers have harvested 106 thousand tons of tomatoes and 206 thousand tons of cucumbers.
