Many people took up gardening when the COCID-19 pandemic struck, to give them both an outside but safe activity and produce to eat, when some foods became scarce.
Those new gardeners as well as old pros can exhibit their best at the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair, which will have shows for flowers, fruits, vegetables and farm crops. There are also contests for baking, jellies and jams and canned foods. The fair runs Wednesday-Sunday, Aug. 25-29, at the Roger K. Everitt Fairgrounds, South County Park, in East Amwell.
The entries for these contests must be taken in on Tuesday, Aug. 24. All the details are on the Fair website, HunterdonCountyFair.com, by clicking on “Show Information” and then “Open and Agricultural Shows.” Details on the tractor and truck pulls, dairy show and other contests open to adults are also there.
The traditional vegetable show is to choose the best specimens, based on uniformity, quality and other attributes. But there is a separate contest, for biggest entries of various fruits and vegetables: the largest, longest, and so on. Classes include biggest beet, longest ear of corn, biggest onion, largest pears, peaches and plums, heaviest watermelon etc. A perennial favorite, it has 38 classes, along with a separate category for what the judges determine is the “most unusual looking” entry.
Some 36 classes ranging from ageratum and aster to sunflower and zinnia make up the flower show, along with flowering shrubs and even wild flowers.
Farm crops are divided into 32 classes, including barley, wheat, oats, soybeans, field corn, hay and straw.
The fairgrounds is at 1207 Route 179, just south of Ringoes and near the Route 202 interchange. The parking fee is $10 per vehicle but there is no per-person admission charge.
