Karnataka: Vegetable platter gets pricier - Times of India

borostos.blogspot.com
MANGALURU: More vegetables have breached the Rs 100 mark after tomato prices shot up to Rs 110 a fortnight back making vegetarian platter expensive. Even more absurd is the price of drum sticks which was Rs 225 on Saturday, rising to reach Rs 320 per kilo, so did curry cucumber which was at Rs 80 per kilo. Curry cucumbers, in times of plenty and previous to September this year, is/ was available at Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg, so is ivy gourd which has breached all previous levels of price hike to reach Rs 110 per kilo.
Though the prices of tomato reduced marginally by 20% on Saturday, it was back again at the previous high on Monday. Double beans breached Rs 100 mark and settled at Rs 90 per kg on Monday.
For hoteliers frown lines are deepening since there are between and the deep blue sea. Just when the business was reaching pre-covid levels, the price rise has hit them hard. Though the hotels had increased prices of a few menu items based on LPG price hike, the abnormal increase in rise in vegetable prices due to unseasonal rains has caught them off guard.
Kudpi Jagadeesh Shenoy, president, DK Hotel Owners Association, said the situation is bad and they are somehow coping up with the situation, losing their margins steadily. His restaurant had increased coffee/ tea prices by Rs 5 and one or two menu items by a similar margin citing cooking fuel hike. ``The vegetable price is shocking and we hope the situation returns to normal,’’ he said.
All hoteliers seem to be sailing in the same boat of uncertainty. A caterer at a popular vegetarian restaurant said presently, the expenditure and income is almost similar. ``We are surviving because customers are coming back, which allows us to balance the revenue. We pray that Covid-19 does not flare up as restrictions have a more damaging effect than the temporary rise in vegetable prices,’’ said the person.
As on Monday, double beans, ladies finger, Cowpea were at Rs 100 a kilo, Capsicum at Rs 140, ridge gourd at Rs 90, cauliflower and cabbage Rs 70 per kg, curry cucumber at Rs 80 and carrot at Rs 100. While there were a few vegetables that were affordable, now only pumpkin at Rs 20 is in that category.
HOPCOMS secretary Ravichandra Shetty says there will be no respite till the unseasonal rains stop at Chikkamagaluru, Hassan where they procure vegetables for local distribution. ``Kukke Subrahmanya Temple has indented 400 kilos of ivy gourd at Rs 30 per kilo for the Shashti fest. We are at a loss how to provide it since the procurement price itself is Rs 90 per kilo,’’ he said, assuring that some quantity will be supplied as it is necessary for the temple festivities.
