The canton of Thurgau granted a concession permit to Grob Gemüse AG at the end of last year. Its greenhouses will be heated through the energy found in the hot groundwater. The Grob family is pleased with the decision of the licensing authorities. "We are happy with this binding approval. With the concession, we now have the guarantee that we will be able to supply a large part of our greenhouses with sustainable heat in the long term. This is an important milestone on the journey to an energy-autonomous operation," owner Stefan Grob told the Tagblatt. The use of groundwater for heating purposes is limited to 30 years.

From depths of up to 2,000 meters, water of up to 60oC will be pumped to the surface. The target is 15 liters of water per second. This corresponds to a thermal output of 3000 kilowatts. In continuous operation, this amounts to 26,000 megawatt hours per year. This could save CO2 emissions amounting to 1,330 tons annually.
