WESTLOCK — A new oat variety that has been developed by FP Genetics will have the name of former Busby area farmers and WW2 veterans, John and Lawrence Byer.

Their names were presented as a unique way to name new crop varieties by John’s son, Jay Byer, who is currently the Interim Manager at Gateway Research Organization (GRO), based out of Westlock. His uncle Lawrence was both his uncle and godfather.

Jay says of his father and uncle, “They were salt of the earth folk, farmers from the Busby area, and both veterans of the Second World War. What an honour and privilege to have a variety named after them.”

The naming of AAC Byer (OT3115) is part of a larger initiative a unique way developed by FP Genetics to honour veterans.

A release from FP Genetics says, “In collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command, we seek to recognize and highlight veterans for the sacrifices made in service to community and country. The legislation that applies to naming plant varieties operates on the principle of ‘One Variety - One Name.’ This affords us a unique, timeless and global opportunity to recognize veterans for their contributions to Canada by name new crop varieties in their honour.

All can participate! The Legion of Saskatchewan Command will accept applications from all provinces, Canada wide.

Since its inception, this program has named over 17 new varieties after deserving veterans.”

Colette Prefontaine, Alberta Territory Manager for FP Geneticsm says “AAC Byer (OT3115) is a high B-glucan milling oat with low oil and moderate protein, good groat percentage and high plump. OT3115 shows good yield percentage, combined with short height and good lodging resistance with moderate maturity and has moderate resistance to crown rust and resistance to smut and BYDV.”

In a separate email following a further query on Byer oats, she adds, “It does appear (with limited registration data) that it performed well in the Black and the Black/grey zones from a yield perspective over checks like Morgan and CS Camden and all the new varieties have better milling characteristics that make them more desirable for just that.”

Producers hoping to grow Byer oats will have to wait a couple of years, however. Prefontaine notes anticipated commercial release date for this new variety is fall 2025.
