Vegetable prices in Kolkata have almost doubled in a month. The most significant rise has been seen in prices of essentials likes potatoes and tomatoes.

According to one vegetable seller: "Most of the vegetables are still in stock in large quantities. This is because the rates are going up but at the same time, the sale has dropped. Prices of brinjal, carrot and bitter guard have gone up to Rs 80 per kg, price of pointed gourd is Rs 60 per kg and cabbage costs Rs 50 per kg. The price of pumpkin is Rs 50 per piece. Lady's finger is Rs 60 per kg and tomato Rs 80 per kg. The price of all the vegetables has increased and have doubled in just a fortnight."

Most of the people who are out buying vegetables are facing similar challenges. One customer said: "The budget has increased. The price of each item has increased by Rs 10. Earlier, tomato was Rs 50-60 per kg. Now, it has increased to Rs 80 per kg. I don't know why the prices have increased. We are, somehow, trying to manage. We are taking a lesser quantity than usual."
