The head for Fruits and Vegetables at Coag Andalucía and provincial secretary of Coag Almería, Andrés Góngora, has warned of the huge concern among Andalusian agricultural producers about the high incidence of virus diseases in vegetable crops in the region. Pepper plants are the most affected due to the spotted virus, while zucchini and cucumber plants are also being attacked by the New Delhi virus, and tomato plants by the yellow leaf curl virus, according to Góngora.
Given these circumstances, he has drawn the attention of seed suppliers, urging them to stop "selling smoke and mirrors" when it comes to virus tolerance, "because, given what we are seeing, the effectiveness of that supposed tolerance is zero." Regarding this matter, Coag Andalucía has asked the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture to exercise some kind of control over the misleading advertising of some seed producers.
The person in charge of Fruits and Vegetables has also called for stricter hygiene measures and for the biological fight to be strengthened in order to fight these threats, which are already wreaking havoc on the start of the protected crops campaign, which is mainly carried out in Almería.
