More than 17kg of marijuana with an estimated street value of K260,000 was confiscated at a private wharf at Motukea in Port Moresby last Saturday. The drugs were shipped into Port Moresby from Lae.

National drug and vice squad acting officer in charge Sergeant Bruno Morgan, said 26 bags were among bags of vegetables that came from Goroka in the Eastern Highlands province to Lae. The bags were then shipped by Bismark Shipping company to the AES wharf at Motukea west of Port Moresby.

When police inspected the container, they discovered that half of the cargo inside the container had already been taken away by the owners of the vegetables. The drug squad officers weighed the bags of marijuana, with weights ranging from 0.5kg up to 1.5kg, totaling up to 17.2kg on the scale.

Sgt Morgan told postcourier.com.pg that the drugs would sell for around K1,000 a bag if they were going to be sold at wholesale prices, but on the streets, all 17.2kg would fetch around K260,000. "Port Moresby is the business centre and hub where all the consumers are. "This is not the first time such a drug haul was confiscated and it will continue," Morgan said. He said it is their job to continue to protect the city from the drugs coming in and also stop people from consuming it.
