Spanish fruit and vegetable imports from Morocco in the first half of this year increased by 18% over the same period of 2019, totaling 548 million euro. This number accounts for 47% of all Spanish imports from third countries, which amounted to 1,157 million euro up until June, and to 33% of all Spanish imports between January and June 2020, which totaled 1,677 million euro.
The evolution of the Spanish fruit and vegetable imports from Morocco has been characterized by constant and strong growth. In the first semester of the last five years, the import volume has increased by 67% from 214,215 tons in 2016 to 358,329 tons in 2020, while the import value has increased by 76% going from 312.3 million euro to 548 million euro, according to data from the Customs and Special Taxes Department processed by FEPEX.
In the last five years, purchases of fruit and vegetables from Morocco have increased in volume by 82% going from 236,775 tons in 2015 to 430,299 tons in 2019, and their value has grown by 94% as they have gone from 352 million euro to 682 million euro.
EU imports of Moroccan fruit and vegetables has also increased. In 2019 the EU imported 1.4 million tons of fruit and vegetables from Morocco, i.e. 4% more than in 2018 and 40% more than in the last five years. In value, purchases from Morocco rose to 1,805 million euro, 3% more than in 2018, and 42% more than in 2015. This data is alarming for the fruit and vegetable sector grouped in FEPEX because Morocco produces and exports in the same window as many of the products that Spain exports under very different productive, social, and environmental conditions.
