The Duchess of Sussex has long been a fan of celebrating good food and drink, from blogging about her culinary adventures as an actress in Suits to spearheading a bestselling community cookbook as a working royal. And now, Meghan is putting her money where her mouth is and investing in a company that makes instant oat milk lattes with ethically-sourced ingredients.
Today, the duchess announced her first public investment in Clevr Blends, a coffee company based in southern California led by Hannah Mendoza. “This investment is in support of a passionate female entrepreneur who prioritizes building community alongside her business,” Meghan said in a statement, adding: “I’m proud to invest in Hannah’s commitment to sourcing ethical ingredients and creating a product that I personally love and has a holistic approach to wellness. I believe in her and I believe in her company.”
Meghan’s decision was motivated in part by the concern over female entrepreneurs and how they have been affected by the pandemic. Her investment will enable Mendoza to scale up her business, which started as a pop-up coffee bar in Santa Barbara. Harry and Meghan moved into a new home in the area over the summer, and it is understood that Meghan reached out to Mendoza after tasting Clevr Blends, which she had received as a gift.
“Entrepreneurs need funding, but they also need advisors who care deeply about what they are building,” Mendoza said in a statement. “I’m grateful to have found both in The Duchess of Sussex—her passion for what we're creating is palpable, and I couldn't imagine a more aligned partnership. We're excited for the road ahead.”
As well as her investment of an undisclosed sum, Meghan’s profile also brings attention to the brand, which has already been thrust into the spotlight. Her friend Oprah highlighted the product on Instagram today, posting a video of her making one of Clevr Blend’s lattes to her 19.2 million followers.
She described Meghan as her neighbor and posted: “Wish I had @clevrblends sooner cause I would’ve added it to my Favourite Things list.” The drinks retail at $28 per bag which the business says makes 14 lattes.
