The Corona-related closures of restaurants and borders has ensured that food sales in the retail trade rose sharply in April, when compared with the year before. In contrast to March, however, there was hardly any more hoarding, said the Federal Office for Agriculture (BLW) in a special report.

Around CHF 639 million were sold in April in the retail trade with food and beverages in Switzerland. Compared with April 2019, this represents an increase of 21 percent. Compared to March 2020, sales still rose by 4.6 percent. Organic sales in April 2020 amounted to just over CHF 70 million, representing a market share of almost 11%.

Fresh products in great demand
According to the FOAG, demand for fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat rose again significantly in April compared to the previous month. According to its own information, the Federal Office refers to data from the market research company Nielsen on purchases in the Swiss retail trade and has carried out an analysis of selected agricultural markets.

However, the sharp increase in demand for meat in the retail trade was not able to compensate for the decline in sales in the catering trade, particularly of beef and veal, the FOAG notes. In April 2020, the retail trade recorded record demand for table eggs, also due to Easter. Demand was 23 percent higher than in the previous year. Additional egg imports were necessary.

Significant increase in the fruit and vegetable sector
Fruit and vegetable sales within retail were also significantly higher in April. Compared to April 2019, the increase in consumption of fruit was around 35 percent and of vegetables over 41 percent. In the case of vegetables, the loss of sales in the catering trade was more or less balanced out by the additional consumption of private households, the report says.

The enormous demand for flour in the retail trade with hamster purchases in the second half of March stabilized at a lower level in April. Compared with March 2020, demand in April was around 40 percent lower, but more was demanded. Compared to April 2019, however, the increase in consumption in April this year was still around 75 percent.

Potatoes
Retail sales of table potatoes in April 2020 were about 34% higher than in the previous year. However, demand for table potatoes in April 2020 was 8% lower than in March 2020. A similar trend is also evident for preserved potato products (e.g. rösti). The significantly lower additional demand for table potatoes and potato products in April compared to March may be explained by a strong stocking up of private households in March. The loss of the catering trade and the additional consumption by private households more or less balances each other out.

Delivery and pick-up wholesale
Not only the catering trade, but also the delivery and pick-up wholesale trade were strongly affected by the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic. Sales in the food service sector fell sharply in March (-20%) and April (-47%). Demand for foodservice services fell most sharply in the amusement catering and hotel sectors. The various assortment groups were affected to varying degrees. In particular, demand for non-alcoholic beverages (-51%), fresh meat (-49%), fruit and vegetables (-45%) and sausage and meat products (-45%) fell sharply.
