Turkey continues to increase fresh fruit and vegetable exports - FreshPlaza.com

The Mediterranean Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association's chairman Nejdat Sin said: "We managed to increase our fresh fruits and vegetables exports amidst the impact of the pandemic on the global economy".

In the first five months of the year, Turkey increased exports by 20% in terms of value and reached 915 million USD (813 million Euro).

In May, Turkey exported 244.000 of fresh fruits and vegetables in return of 159.5 million USD (141.7 million Euro). This marked an increase by 13% in terms of value compared to the same period last year. The association is responsible of 111.000 tons of this export and earned 62 million USD (55 million Euro). This marked an increase of 6% compared to the same period last year. Chairman Sin interpreted the figures and said that exporters managed the situation well during the coronavirus pandemic.

Emphasising that they meet growing demands from the European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Chairman Sin said:

"In May, the biggest growth in our exports occurred in relation to Poland with an increase by 747%. This was followed by Belgium with an increase by 130% and Georgia with an increase by 104%. We also observed noticeable increases in our exports to North Macedonia, Ukraine, Romania and the Netherlands."

In May, Turkey exported 57.2 million USD (50.8 million Euro) worth of fresh fruits and vegetables to Russia, this was followed by Germany with 20.4 million USD (18.1 million Euro) and Romania with 16.9 million USD (15 million Euro).

Last year, Turkey exported 2.2 billion USD (1.95 billion Euro) worth of fresh fruits and vegetables. While, the country increased exports by 20% in the first five months and reached a an export value of 915 million USD (813 million Euro), The Mediterranean Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association increased exports by 15% and reached an export value of 432 million USD (383.8 million Euro).

Stating that they take necessary precautions during the coronavirus, Sin said: "We expect reduced prices for air freight. This needs to be addressed very quickly so that we can efficiently meet demands from Europe and the Far East. Inclusion of new destinations would also allow Turkish fresh fruits and vegetables to reach to more markets much quicker. We expect support from state in air freight costs. Soon, we also expect an additional cost due to extra packaging, therefore it is a pressing issue for us. Due to the coronavirus, consumers now prefer products that are safe and hygienic."
