China's "Vegetable Basket" program can help meet the vegetable demands for 1.4 billion people, and the output of multiple meat products and fruits have both increased, CCTV reported on Sunday.
"China's general vegetable supply is secured and can provide 1.5-kilogram vegetable for each person per day," said Zhao Zhuo, an official from the Department of Market and Informatization under Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MOA). Zhao noted that the capacity is approximately three times that of the global average.
In October, consumer prices of vegetable surged due to impacts of flooding in some provinces and postponed transportation.
According to the market monitor at MOA, steep rising vegetable prices have been easing thanks to increasing supplies now. MOA also predicted that the overall price level of vegetable and fruit will remain elevated with the arrival of 2022 and the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival which falls on late January 2022, but the magnitude of price hike will be curbed.
MOA predicted that the volume of vegetable supplies will reach 200 million tons around the Chinese New Year, witnessing a year-on-year increase of 7 million tons.
MOA said the spike of country's vegetable prices will be curbed, barring widespread bad weather patterns during the remaining time of the year.
