Some people not nuanced in the blues are sometimes surprised by the amount of humor found in the genre. It's one of those "laughin' just to keep from cryin'" constructs.
The fine Bronx electric blues/soul/rocker Popa Chubby — See! Even his name is comical! — is a master at using wit as one of the many characteristics of his prolific and excellent work. It's also true that, here in this era when conspiracy theories abound, his latest CD is called "Tin Foil Hat." The cover photo shows The Chub-Man wearing a tinfoil crown, playing a National Steel Standard guitar, and with a joint poking out of his mouth.
And in a video from the new album, of the tune "Baby Put On Your Mask," Popa is wearing a mask that replicates the iconic "Schizo Face" from the first King Crimson album. Not what you'd expect, but it's pretty great.
See Popa Chubby Wednesday at the Norwich Arts Center when he performs as part of their Blues on Broadway series. Bring your blues and they shall be banished!
