Danish supermarket sees clear rise in pre-packaged fruits and vegetable sales - hortidaily.com

Michael Bjerg is the branch manager of Superbrugsen - the Danish supermarket chain - in Søndersø. This town is on the Danish island of Funen. He has noticed some customers' shopping habits change during the corona crisis. "Sales of plastic-packaged fruit and vegetables have increased. There is a clear flow in this."

"Consumers, undoubtedly, in a certain way, consider packaged products to be safer." Bjerg estimates about 15% of fruit and vegetable sales have shifted. That is from unpackaged to packaged products. This reinforces his suspicion - people are trying to avoid contamination in as many ways as possible.

The number of shoppers decreased earlier in the corona crisis. Bjerg has, however, noticed that customer numbers are normalizing. "Our customer stream has returned to normal. We can see our online sales have now decreased too. That is compared to the start of the crisis." Lately, the supermarket has been attracting more people again. So, generally, the total number of shoppers has not decreased.

Using shopping hours
There has not only been an increase in packaged fruit and vegetable sales. There is another striking shopping habit. "People use our shopping hours well. They come to the store at all kinds of different times. Sales per customer are still high too. Not as high as at the corona crisis' start. However, still higher than usual. It looks like people are storing their purchases. They buy more at once," concludes Bjern.
