ED: That’s awesome. You mentioned wanting to take notes. Is there one thing that you’ve said you’ve taken from your time with him or a piece of advice that he’s given you that you’ve held onto?

Oats: “It’s ironic. I got there, and you’re kind of drinking water from a water hose for the first month or two. Well, then you kind of get the roster set, workouts done and then football camps starts. That was last August. All of our guys were off-campus, so I spent a lot of time over there. I asked him if he minded if I shadowed him for a day, which I did. I sat in a lot of meetings. They have all the speakers come over and speak. Like last summer, they had Mike Tyson and Jay Bilas was there. I came over for that one. Ray Rice came in, and he was great. I came over for that one. But the day I shadowed him, they start at like 7:30 in the morning and go to like 10 at night every day, so I showed up at 7:15 to make sure I wasn’t late. They got through meetings, the whole thing, and we get to dinnertime, there’s no time off. When the players aren’t with them, they’re meeting.

He pulls me into his office and says, ‘Do you have anything for me?’ And I kind of looked at him like, ‘If you’re asking if I’ve got something to suggest to you after spending the day watching you, no, you’re out of your mind. I’m not even thinking that way. Even if I was, I wouldn’t tell you.’ I said, ‘If you’re asking if I have questions, yeah, I’ve got a lot of questions about how you do stuff,’ and so he kind of laughed and we went on.

And then I actually went on a road trip with them when they played in Atlanta against Duke. I went to every meeting they did. If you go through the walkthrough the day before the game and then the meeting the morning of the game and watch, they talk about everything. Like a neutral-site game, ‘Which end do we want to be on if we win the coin flip? If this game goes to overtime?’ Stuff you don’t even think about. So, I just think his attention detail has been at a really, really high level for a long time, and that’s why they’ve won so many games. It made me start to think how can we translate that attention to detail over to basketball, and you kind of try to figure out what you can and how you can apply it to basketball.”
