After a long cold spring, the weather is finally beginning to feel like spring in the Rochester region.

The planting season for annual flowers and vegetables officially kicks off Memorial Day weekend. Vegetable gardening has gained traction this year as more people are interested in growing their own food during the pandemic.

Area garden centers are open for business and some offer no contact pick up. Here are some of the area centers operating in the new normal.

1. The Garden Factory. 2126 Buffalo Road, Gates. This is the giant smorgasbord of gardening. Everything you want is available from plants to soil to annuals and trees. The Garden Factory is known for its big flowering baskets of flowers packed with gerbera daisies to petunias and they sell for $24.99. Masks are required for entering the center.

2. Chase's Greenhouse. 5874 E. Henrietta Road, Rush. This garden center is a grower and all of the flowers and plants are grown on the premises. It's a family-owned business that has been open since 1880 and a family member will help with your selection. The greenhouse offers just about every type of annual flower at $18 a flat, with favorites such as marigold and impatiens. It is offering a special on the flowering baskets at two for $30.

3. Bristol's Garden Center. 7454 NY-96, Victor. The family-owned business offers a wide range of flowers, plants and trees and shrubs for landscaping. Popular this year are its vegetables and you can buy plantings to prepare for planting vegetables and herbs. It offers touchless pickup service. You may call in your order and it will be ready for you with assistance to load it into your car.

4. Kirby's Farm Market. 9739 W Ridge Rd, Brockport, Three generations of the Kirby family work at the market which grows its own plants. It is adapting to the coronavirus challenge with some social distancing practices. Only 10 people will be allowed to shop in the greenhouse at a time and masks must be worn at all times. Staffers will spray your hands with a disinfectant when you enter.

Vegetable plants such as cucumbers and peppers have been selling very briskly, said Ted Cooper, a staffer at the market.

Customers must wear masks and practice social distancing at the center. It takes phone orders Monday through Friday to offer curbside pickup.

7. Genrich's Garden Center. 375 Cooper Road, Irondequoit. The garden center in Irondequoit is open and asks customers to wear masks and practice social distancing. It also offers an online ordering option with zinnias, snapdragons, cosmos just added.

8. CountryMax. Four locations in Monroe County in Henrietta, Fairport, Brockport and Spencerport. The super store sells plants along with pet supplies and more. it offers touchless pickup and customers may call in orders. You may also take an online tour of the stores.

These are just some of the many garden centers in the Greater Rochester region and there are many more. Be on the lookout for additional vegetable plant inventory such as peppers and tomatoes. Other popular picks include cauliflower, kale, lettuce, spinach and peas. The Rochester Public Market is not hosting Flower City Days due to the pandemic but some of the regular Thursday and Saturday vendors bring their plants for sale.

As vegetable gardening is very popular this year, Mickie Sanna of Bristol's Garden Center in Victor offers a helpful tip. Prep your outdoor vegetable garden or raised garden beds by mixing compost in with soil to add nutrients to the garden.

Happy gardening.
