NEW DELHI: Fruit and vegetable prices remain stable even though supplies in the Delhi’s Azadpur mandi have fallen because of restricted inter-state movement, particularly from Haryana.
Traders in the mandi are also worried with 28 traders been tested positive.
On Friday, the arrivals in the mandi was 5760 tonnes of vegetables and fruits compared to 7000 to 8000 tonne arrival since the lockdown, said the government figures.
“At present, vegetables and fruits are available in proportion to the Delhi NCR demand. The prices too have remained stable and there has been no increase,” said Adil Ahmad Khan, chairman of Azadpur APMC
While traders said that 28 traders have been confirmed positive, Khan said that the district administration has confirmed the positive report of 16 people.
“The district surveillance team is investigating more people in their contact. So far, 25 shops have been sealed in the market, and 43 people have been quarantine,” he said. On Friday, the medical surveillance team of District North conducted 550 tests in the market for Covid-19 out of which 50 samples have been collected in suspicion of Covid-19 cases.
Anil Malhotra, trader and member of Azadpur APMC committee said that with Haryana sealing the border, supplies of vegetables from Sonepat has dropped. He said that farmers from Punjab will also stop supplies with the rising number of cases in the state. “The prices are currently stable, but may increase by next week,” he said adding that the number of coronavirus patients was increasing in the mandi.
Vegetable prices have remained stable, said Pradipta Sahoo, business head, Safal. He said through there 310 retail outlets, they were selling 250 tonnes of fruit and vegetables per day.
“The supplies are coming from around 10 states mostly from farmers and farmer’s aggregators. Our product sales is doubled over the same month last year. The only issue we are facing is in loading and availability of transporters due to labourers and drivers not reporting to work,” said Sahoo
Meanwhile, the Delhi Government has deployed two medical teams in Azadpur mandi to screen farmers, labourers, drivers, traders and all the people working in the market.
