After being pipped at the post in the race to launch New Zealand's first oat milk chocolate, Whittaker’s is ready to roll out its offering.
From Monday, chocolate lovers will be able to buy Whittaker’s oat milk chocolate alongside its other 250-gram blocks.
The 42% cocoa chocolate is made with Harraways oats and is a permanent addition to the Porirua-based chocolate company’s range.
The launch announcement comes three weeks after an online oopsie-daisy saw an ad for the Whittaker’s product pop up on Google.

But the link to the product was dead, and by the following day, the ad had disappeared completely.

At the time, a Whittaker’s spokesperson was unable to comment on the product or confirm if it even existed, a line the company stuck to last week when Wellington Chocolate Factory released its own oat milk chocolate.
But the silence was well and truly broken on Wednesday when Whittaker’s proudly revealed its launch plans on social media.
Whittaker’s product development manager, Megan Sinclair, said its dairy-free treat had a “distinct and moreish” taste that would appeal to people who preferred plant-based options, flexitarians, and anyone who loved to try something new.
Whittaker’s had been able to use its existing equipment to grind locally-sourced oats to create the chocolate, rather than having to import ground oats, Sinclair said.
Henry Hawkins, Harraways Oats chief executive, said the Dunedin company was honoured to partner with Whittaker’s on its latest creation.
“We’re biased of course, but we think people are going to love the subtle toasted oat flavours,” he said.
Whittaker’s Oat Milk will be available in stores nationwide from Monday.
