According to the latest data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, made public on January 21, Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports between January and November 2020 decreased by 3.5% in volume over the same period of 2019, totaling 11.6 million tons, while imports grew by 3.7%, totaling 3 million tons.

The volume of vegetables exported in that period was practically the same as in the first eleven months of 2019, 4.9 million tons (+ 0.1%), while imports grew by 4%, totaling 1.3 million tons. Spanish fruit exports fell by 6%, totaling 6.6 million tons and imports increased by 3%, amounting to 1.6 million tons.

The value of fruit and vegetable exports increased by 9% and 13,186 million euro, while the value of imports increased by 7% and 2,842 million euro. Vegetable exports stood at 5,360 million euro and fruit exports at 7,826 million euro. Meanwhile, vegetable imports amounted to 808 million euro and fruit imports totaled 2,033 million euro.

According to FEPEX, the data from January to November shows imports were stronger than exports, as the former grew by 3.7% in volume and the latter fell by 3.5%. The value of imports grew by 7% and the value of exports by 9%, given the structure of Spanish exports that incorporates products with a higher value, especially vegetables.

The increase in Spanish imports is also attributable to the imports' lower prices. The average export price of tomatoes, for example, stood at € 1.29/kg, while the imported product had an average price of € 0.92 /kg; the average export price of peppers was € 1.39/kg, while the import price stood at € 1/kg; and the average export price of raspberries stood at € 7.2/kg, while their import price was € 5.4/kg.
