Leida Lovera, the director of vegetables of the Confederation of Associations of Agricultural Producers of Venezuela (FEDEAGRO), said that the country's horticultural sector's production capacity had decreased by 75%. The decrease, she said, was the result of the fuel crisis, an asset that is essential to operate the machinery used to disinfect, irrigate, and mobilize the products.

Lovera said they were in conversations with the authorities to find solutions to this problem. However, he said, they seem to be unaware of the realities of the agricultural sector.

Another issue they are facing is unfair competition due to the entry of imported products. According to Lovera, there are products entering the country from Colombia that are affecting the little national production. "A good quality onion that already has a defined marketing network is arriving into the country," he said.

He called on the population to acquire the products that are processed in Venezuela and to support producers who are facing great difficulties, including the decline in public services. "Farmers continue to plant and look for options, even if they are unable to cover costs, so we'll continue to hope, produce, and work for the country this year," he said.
