Garden tip: How to start a vegetable garden - Marin Independent Journal

borostos.blogspot.com

Are you new to vegetable gardening? It’s not too late to start. Pam Peirce, author of “Golden Gate Gardening,” says beans, beets, corn, cucumbers, okra, parsnips and squash can be planted in June. Vegetables from your own garden are so fresh and tasty.

The site you choose for your new garden should get six to eight hours of sunlight each day. Perhaps you will want to start with a small raised bed. If your plants will be in the ground, you should prepare the seedbed with large amounts of organic matter. If you use a raised bed, you will probably fill it with purchased potting soil.
After planting seeds or transplanting seedlings, add a layer of mulch to retain moisture. Keep the mulch away from the stem of the plant. Later a side dressing of nitrogen fertilizer should be used to stimulate growth. Regular water is essential.

For more details, look at “Vegetable Garden Basics,” a publication by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.
