More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of Juneteenth. As Black Americans celebrate this noteworthy day, Black-owned ice cream brand Whipped Urban Dessert Lab launched its “Taste of Freedom” variety in its line of oat milk “Ice Crème.” Not only does the new flavor sound amazing, but the significance of its ingredients is also notable.
While a lot of ice cream at the local market uses dairy-filled milk, Urban Dessert Lab opts in for oat milk. Learning that roughly 75% of African Americans are lactose intolerant, sisters Courtney Blagrove and Zan B.R. made an alternative. Plus, the Black-owned ice cream brand also offers plant-based, vegan and dairy-free options that still taste like the real thing. To honor Juneteenth, the shop’s new Taste of Freedom oat milk ice crème flavor is a whole new level of deliciousness.

Inspired by Booker T. Washington, the ice cream flavor serves as a symbol of Washington’s idea of freedom. Per his autobiography, Washington states a promise to himself that, if he was freed, he would taste the same ginger cakes he watched white families enjoying in their homes. The autobiography states, “Those cakes seemed to me to be absolutely the most tempting and desirable things that I had ever seen.”
Infusing Washington’s wishes into their own oat milk ice crème recipe, Whipped Urban Dessert Lab’s Taste of Freedom flavor highlights a milky cinnamon base with a delicious surprise of chewy ginger cookie all throughout. After trying the flavor myself, I can honestly say it’s not too sweet. I, too, craved more pieces of the ginger cookie once I finished the carton. Additionally, the brand is donating 18.65% of its sales on June 19 to Youth Represent — the percentage marks the year when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas heard they were free.
If you want to celebrate Juneteenth and beyond with a cold treat while also supporting Black women, look no further than this allergy-friendly ice cream shop.
