With more and more people turning to dairy-alternative milks, foodies are sharing their money-saving recipes for making oat milk at home.

One litre of oat milk can retail between $3-$5 at major Australia supermarkets but one thrifty woman made more than six cups of the dairy alternative for 50 cents.

She simply blends water, oats, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a very small pinch of salt then pours the mix through a strainer or cheese cloth to get milk.

In a post to a popular Facebook group, a foodie said she simply blends water, oats, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt then pours the mix through a strainer or cheese cloth to get milk

'Don't push the mushy oats through the strainer or else it will be gritty,' the woman added.

Her post received hundreds of impressed comments from fellow foodies keen to give the recipe a try for themselves.

'If this works well I will be kicking myself for not trying sooner…I spend a fortune on Oat Milk,' one woman wrote.

Others were sceptical saying their home oat milk experiments were 'awful tasting' or came out 'slimy' but many were quick to offer their suggestions.

'Add some cashews to make it creamy and you'll be in heaven,' a user recommended.

'Mine was slimy at first when I used a recipe that said to soak the oats, apparently the key is to blitz for a short while and not to soak them, mine improved when I didn't soak,' said a second.

'Sometimes I add some coconut flakes to add fat and creaminess to my 'milk',' a third chimed in.

Another vegan home cook made her own version of oat milk with dates instead of maple syrup she said is 'perfect with tea and smoothies'

She also said the milk can be stored in the fridge for up to five days and she uses the pulp to make porridge with coconut milk.
