Spain's fruit and vegetable production was led by tomatoes with 4.74 million tons (4.31 million in 2020), peppers with 1.50 million (1.46 million); onions with 1.45 million (1.29 million); watermelons with 1.38 million (1.23 million), and lettuce with 1.06 million (961,938 tons).

The country devoted 401,711 hectares to the cultivation of fruits and vegetables in 2021, a higher number than the 386,084 hectares it used in 2020. Andalusia concentrated the largest area with 134,939 hectares, 65,177 of which corresponded to Almeria's greenhouses and outdoor plots.

Andalusia was followed by Murcia with 58,066 hectares, Castilla-La Mancha with 53,057 hectares, Extremadura (31,521 ha), Valencia (26,328 ha), Navarre (24,798 ha), Aragon (15,450 ha), Castile and Leon (14,458 ha), Galicia (13,105 hectares), Catalonia (9,677 ha), the Canary Islands (7,022 ha), La Rioja (5,093 ha), Madrid (3,396 ha), the Basque Country (2,227 ha), the Balearic Islands (1,792 ha), Asturias (730 ha), and Cantabria with 52 hectares.

According to the advance of "Annual crop surfaces and productions 2021" published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAP), there was an increase in the area devoted to green pea (3,085 hectares more than in 2020), watermelon (+2,369 ha), garlic (+1,889 ha), sweet corn (+1,788 ha), and onion (+1,640 ha) crops in 2021.

In contrast, there was a decrease in the area of asparagus (695 hectares less than in 2020), cauliflower (-428 ha), strawberry (-128 ha), grelo (-111 ha), and eggplant (-109 ha).

11.26 million tons of the 16.39 million tons of fruits and vegetables harvested last year were sold for fresh consumption and 4.49 million were destined for the processing industry. 349,003 tons were destined for animal feed and 284,338 tons for human feed.

Spain as a whole exported 5.7 million tons of vegetables last year, 1.6% more than in the previous year, which generated 6,576 million euro (+9%) in revenue for producers, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise.

Peppers became the best-selling Spanish vegetable abroad, with 853,582 tons (+1%) and 1,270 million euro (+9.5%), followed by lettuce with 811,703 tons (+6%) and 827 million euro (+18%), reinforcing the importance of these two products in the country's fruit and vegetable production.
