VINCENNES, Ind. — Due to the late-season colder temperatures and late freezes that have happened throughout Indiana, many fruit and vegetable producers have suffered varying levels of damage to their crops.

Wenjing Guan, a Purdue University clinical/engagement assistant professor of horticulture, said there weren’t too many late frosts in the southern part of the state, just an extended cold period, where temperatures dropped to around 32 degrees, which can be tough on cucurbit plants that are grown in that part of the state.

Guan, who works at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, said watermelon and cantaloupe growers in that region have reported some plants will wilt if the temperature doesn’t recover.

“Sometimes some growth will be OK and come back,” Guan said, adding that, unlike last year, the temperatures this year were not quite as brutal, so some producers that experienced some level of damage this year should be able to replant.

Vegetable plants are not like fruit — when vegetable plants suffer damage from frost, they more than likely have to be replanted, Guan said.
