Spain exported 3.7 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables for 4,656 million euro in the first quarter of this year, i.e. 3.5% less volume and 3% more value than in the same period of 2020, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise made public on Tuesday. Imports continue to have a positive evolution, as they increased by 7% in volume and value, standing at 961,122 tons and 887 million euro.

Vegetable export decreased by 2% in the first quarter of 2020, totaling 2 million tons while fruit exports decreased by 5%, totaling 1.7 million tons. The most outstanding declines in vegetable exports were seen in tomato shipments, which amounted to 292,334 tons (-11%), and cucumber exports, which amounted to 235,251 tons (-11%). The most exported fruits, such as oranges or strawberries, had the biggest drops as they totaled 120,456 tons (-9%). The value of vegetable exports increased by 5% and totaled 2.455 million euro, while the value of fruit exports remained stable and only grew by 0.4%, totaling 2,201 million euro.

In the first quarter of the year, Andalusia led exports with 1.3 million tons (-7% less than in the same period of the previous year), for 2,080 million euro, the same amount as in the first quarter of 2020. It was followed by the Valencian Community with 1.2 million tons (-1%) and 1,374 million euro (+ 8%), and Murcia with 671,305 tons (-8%) and 716 million euro (-5%).

The EU-27 was the recipient of 82% of Spanish fruit and vegetables, with 3.1 million tons, worth 3,688 million euro. The country exported 686,349 tons outside the EU. The UK was its main non-EU market with 461,669 tons. Exports outside of Europe remain at very low volumes with 114,678 tons, i.e. 25% less than in the same period of last year.

Imports in the first quarter grew by 7% in volume and value, reaching 961,122 tons and 887 million euro. Spain purchased 499,494 tons (+ 2%) of vegetables for 273 million euro (-4.5%). The country imported 306,134 tons of potatoes for 80 million euro (-22%), which accounts for 62% of all imports.

The statistics for the first quarter show the decline in the volume of Spanish sales, which began in 2020, the continuous positive evolution of imports, and Morocco's consolidation as Spain's first supplier with 304 million euro in the first quarter, i.e. 5% more than in the same period of last year.
