Homefront Farmers, the area’s leading provider of vegetable garden construction and maintenance services, has been cultivating its new Redding farm and is now offering specialty vegetable garden seedlings for sale to the general public!
An assortment of kitchen garden seedlings and transplants will be available this Saturday from 12-5pm, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, lettuces, cucumbers, varieties of squash and more. Annual flowers known to attract beneficial bugs, and repel unwanted bugs, to the vegetable garden will also be available!
The company, founded in 2011, is focused on helping clients produce their own food, organically. Sitting on 11.5 acres of vacant land in Redding, the budding farm consists of a greenhouse, model vegetable gardens, fields for produce and native flowers, and a farmhouse.
In addition to gardens, the company has recently branched out into other fun food activities, including beekeeping, growing gourmet mushrooms and maple sugaring both in their farm’s sugarbush and at clients’ homes. “This farm is a dream come true for us, and we’d like nothing more than to share that joy with our neighbors, so come visit us!” says founder, John Carlson.
For neighbors in Ridgefield, Redding and surrounding towns who don’t have a garden, but who love organically-grown and high quality vegetables, Homefront Farmers is also growing delicious, fresh produce. The produce is sold on their website and is then picked up or delivered. It can also be found at two area farm-stand locations.
Vegetable lovers and cooks alike will delight in the assortment of vegetables and gourmet mushrooms available this season. Spring vegetables are just now becoming available with harvests of bright green bok choy, red French radishes, and mixes of baby salad greens including kale, lettuces, mizuna, and spinach. Soon to be ready for harvest are beans, beets, broccoli, kale, and kohlrabi. Later this summer, there will be specialty and heirloom tomatoes along with myriad other mainstays of summer harvests. And new this season is a mushroom club, initiated for clients interested in receiving weekly gourmet mushroom deliveries which include Lions Mane, Black and Blue Oyster, and Shiitake.
Homefront Farmers is located at 130 Picketts Ridge Road in Redding. They have a busy growing season ahead with this Saturday’s vegetable seedling sale, a farm stand every Saturday at Nod Hill Brewery’s Biergarten, and a farm stand on Friday afternoons at the Picketts Ridge Road farm.
